A retail worker recently shared a satisfying holiday memory from their years at a bookstore. A customer came in insisting on picking up a hardcover John Grisham title that had been out of print for ages. The worker couldn't find the hold and gently suggested the customer might have mixed up stores. The customer was adamant, ranting about the store's incompetence while the worker quietly phoned a local used bookstore chain. Turns out, the book was sitting there under the customer's name—hardcover and all. The worker relayed the news, noting the other store was across town and closing in 30 minutes. It was a rare moment of smugness in retail, and they still treasure it. Have you ever had a customer insist they were right, only to be proven wrong in the best way?

Something like that happened at my old job in a phone shop, years back. This bloke came in fuming because he'd bought a charger from us that didn't fit his phone, kept saying we'd given him the wrong one. I checked the receipt and it was from a shop two towns over, not even the same chain. He went bright red when I showed him on the map, proper awkward silence. Reckon he drove all the way back there with his tail between his legs. Always makes me chuckle when I think of it, reminds me of that time in the pub when someone argued York was north of Leeds and I had to pull up a map on my phone.

Something similar happened at the planetarium I used to volunteer at. A visitor insisted we'd moved the telescope without telling anyone, but it was just the one at a different centre he'd been to last time. Felt a bit smug pointing out the serial numbers. Felt good.
