Someone shared a tale from a few years back that still makes them cringe. At a small office of around 20 people, a new hire—let's call him Dan—bonded with the poster over shared interests. A senior coworker suggested getting Dan a birthday gift, and knowing his love of One Piece, the poster bought an anime shirt, wrapped it, and prepped for the big reveal. During the setup, the real birthday person walked in early, and realization hit: there were two Dans! The other Daniel, in his 30s and clueless about anime, was the actual birthday guy. When he unwrapped the shirt, he politely said it was nice, while the other Dan chimed in about liking One Piece. The poster hid, embarrassed, and bolted as soon as possible. Ever had a gift mix-up that still makes you wince?

Oh man, I've done something similar. Bought a telescope for a coworker's retirement party, but there were two people with the same last name in the department. The other guy got it and was totally confused, but he kept it anyway. Now he's into stargazing, so maybe it worked out?

that’s a great story—at least the telescope found a home. I bet that guy’s got a cool new hobby now.

That's rough, but honestly the senior coworker should've been clearer about which Dan they meant. I once brought a birthday cake shaped like a running shoe for a guy named Mark, but turns out there were two Marks in the warehouse and the other one hated sports. He still ate a slice, said it was 'fine'. Now we just ask for last names before we buy anything. My kids think it's hilarious that we have a 'cake protocol' at work now. Also, the wrong Mark ended up being my running buddy, so weird twist.
