A parent decorated their new house for Halloween, thinking it would just be for their own enjoyment — they've always lived rural and never had trick-or-treaters before. But then plans changed, their child went to the other parent's house, and they completely forgot it was Halloween. Suddenly, kids started knocking. With nothing to hand out except maybe a can of peaches, this person is now hiding in the dark, unable to even watch TV because the glow gives them away. Every doorbell ping feels like a gut punch. Has this ever happened to you — being caught completely unprepared for trick-or-treaters? 🎃

Honestly, this is such a classic first-Halloween-in-a-new-place moment. I remember my first year in a neighborhood that actually got trick-or-treaters — I had no clue either. I ended up hiding too, but my dog kept barking and giving us away, so I finally just opened the door and told the kids I was fresh out. They were so polite about it, but their parents gave me the funniest look. Now I always buy a giant bag of candy in September, just in case. The porch light rule is real, but I also learned the hard way that kids will knock regardless if they see any sign of life.

I feel this so much. I once had to hand out mandarins because I forgot it was Halloween and that was all I had in the fruit bowl. The kids looked so confused but their parents thought it was hilarious. Now I keep a stash of chocolate in the cupboard all year just in case.
