A hotel front desk worker shared a story about why they hate open-concept lobby designs. They said their three desks have gaps with plant vases meant to keep guests on their side, but people still squeeze around to peek at the screen. One guest made a small fuss about adding his loyalty number to his wife's reservation. When told she already had one, he quickly squeezed around the desk to look at the screen. He then asked for her point balance and wanted to replace the number. The worker said no, partly because the system makes it difficult, but mostly because they just wanted him to leave. He finally did, but it reminded them how much they dislike this layout. Have you ever had someone invade your personal space at a service counter?

Oh man, this is way too relatable. I used to work at a coffee shop with an open counter and people would lean right over to watch me pour their latte. Like, dude, just back up a step and I'll hand it to you.

Sounds like that guy was way too into the loyalty points. Reminds me of when I was at a game store and someone stood so close behind me while I was looking at retro consoles I could feel their breath on my neck. Had to just walk away.

This brings back memories of working at a bookstore years ago. We had these low counters and people would lean over them to see what I was typing on the computer. One woman even reached over and tapped my screen to point at something. I get that people are curious or in a hurry, but there's a line. The worst was a guy who came around the counter to grab a pen I was using, like he didn't think to just ask for one. I started keeping my chair pushed way back after that. It's wild how some folks just don't see the counter as a boundary.
